About Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (CUWMA)

George Mason University is a cooperating member of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Full participating members included in the Consortium are:

Joint Military Defense College and the National Defense University are not yet participating in cross-registration.

Eligible students are provided the opportunity to benefit from the offerings of member institutions and to enroll for courses at any of the participating institutions. Students register and pay tuition at their home institution for all consortium courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is the Consortium for cross-registration?
    • The cross-registration process permits students enrolled in degree programs at one institution to register for a course that is being offered at another institution which is a member participant.

  • 2. Where do I go for more information about the program?
    • Both our catalog and schedule contain information pertaining to the entire process. Further information can be obtained in the Office of the University Registrar, Student Union I, Room 2101.

  • 3. How can I find out what courses are offered at other institutions?
    • Schedules and catalogues of participating universities within the Consortium are available on the website for each institution.

  • 4. Can I take as many courses as I would like through the Consortium?
    • The number of students are limited as to the number of courses they may register for in a semester as well as within a graduate or undergraduate career. Coursework is also subject to the requirements of the particular school in which a student is enrolled. All coursework attempted by the Mason student must be authorized by the appropriate dean and chair of thedepartment of their major.

  • 5 . Is there a deadline for turning in the paperwork?
    • Yes, approved registration requests must be received in the Consortium office no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester at George Mason University.

  • 6. What tuition do I pay?
    • George Mason students pay the George Mason tuition rate to the George Mason Student Accounts Office. You are billed as if you are taking the course at Mason. George Mason students who are also employees are not permitted to use the "employee waiver" for Consortium cross-registration.

  • 7. What about my grade?
    • The grade is treated as resident credit...ie..as if you have taken the course at George Mason. The Consortium Coordinator handles the recording of your grade. It calculates into your George Mason University grade point average. The grade and course will appear on your George Mason transcript. It is not treated as a transfer credit.

  • 8. Can I audit a course through the Consortium?
    • Auditing is not permitted.

  • 8. Can I take a course through the Consortium with pass/fail grading?
    • No. Courses must be taking with regular grading.

  • 9. If I am an Air Force ROTC student , how do I register for courses within the AFROTC program?
    • Registration for Air force ROTC Coursework at the University of Maryland at College Park is processed through the Consortium Office. Forms and information are also available in the Consortium Office.
