Transfer Course Equivalency and Substitution/Waiver Forms

 

Some transfer courses have been determined to be official equivalents of Mason courses. When students transfer to Mason and supply their official transcript, these equivalencies are reflected on their Patriot Web transcript.  Students may request that other transfer courses be counted as equivalent to Mason courses.  Students may also request that a particular course be used to meet a requirement in their Mason academic program, even though it is not a direct equivalent.  Students may also request that a requirement in their academic program be waived for a particular reason. 

NOTE:  While students are entitled to request that courses be used in these ways, faculty and deans may not be able to approve those requests.  They will analyze the requests carefully and determine what is in the best interest of the student’s education and the academic program’s standards.  Here are the forms to use, with information about each:

Transfer Credit Re-evaluation Appeal:
  to request re-evaluation for a possible transfer equivalency beyond those posted by Admissions through the initial Inquiry.

Academic department from which credit equivalency is sought


Substitution/Waiver Form: 
to request that a requirement in a student’s academic program be met by: 1) a transfer course even though not considered equivalent to a Mason course, or 2) a Mason course not usually applied to meet the requirement.  Also to request that, on some clearly-detailed basis, a requirement in the student’s academic program be waived.  (Does not waive or give credit hours.)


Representative (usually the student’s advisor; sometimes the chair) from the department of the student’s academic program.  Also the student’s Dean’s office, usually an Assistant or Associate Dean.  Waivers of University General Education requirements also require the approval of the Associate Provost.
