- All students must file their Intent to Graduate (GIF)
You MUST file for graduation regardless of whether you plan to participate in the May Commencement and Convocation Ceremonies. Please submit your Intent to Graduate (GIF) online through Patriot Web. There is a mandatory senior student survey for all filers. Graduate students who are also seeking Certificates must file a GIF for both the Master’s/PhD program AND the Certificate program.
- Summer Graduates Participate in May Commencement Ceremonies
With the exception of Doctoral students, as long as a Graduation Intent Form is submitted by the published deadline, those who will be taking summer classes and graduating in August 2008 are invited to participate in the May 2008 Commencement Ceremonies. Doctoral students who graduate in August 2008 will walk in the May 2009 Commencement Ceremonies.
- Courses/Thesis/Dissertation/Comps/Project Deadlines
For more information on the Library deadlines for theses and dissertations, please visit the Library Collections website.
- Incomplete Grade Deadlines
All in-progress grades (IN, IP, NR), even if they are not applicable to the degree, must be resolved within six weeks after a conferral date. For May 2008 gradutes, the absolute deadline for grades to be posted with the Registrar is June 27, 2008 . If you are unable to finish the course work during this six-week period, you must withdraw your current Graduation Intent Form and re-file for the next scheduled graduation.
- Study Elsewhere Credit
If permission was ever granted to Study Elsewhere (ZREG), please make sure that transcripts are sent to the Office of the Registrar (MSN 3D1). For May 2008 graduates, transcripts must be received and credits posted with the Office of the Registrar by June 27, 2008 . ZREG hours are considered registered hours until either transcripts arrive or notification that no classes were taken is received. You will not be graduated with active ZREG hours. If no classes were taken, please print and return the Removal of Study Elsewhere Hours Request form as soon as possible to avoid later delays.
- Not Active in the Semester
You must be actively enrolled in the semester you graduate. This requirement is met by being enrolled for classes or through Special Registration. Special Registration allows you to remain active in the Mason University System without being registered for an actual course. There is a $45 fee.The most common reason for needing a special registration is for students who are working on finishing courses with incomplete grades from a previous semester. This type of registration does not meet the continuous enrollment requirement for students working on a thesis or dissertation*. If you are working on a thesis or dissertation, you must enroll in at least one hour of 799 or 999 coursework. Your academic department can assist you with this process.*
- *EXCEPTION:Graduation candidates who miss the library deadline for thesis or dissertation submission, but do submit officially before the next semester begins, do not have to register for 799 or 999 in that semester, but may stay active through Special Registration.
- Graduate Courses for Reserve and Undergraduate Credit Problems
Undergraduates: Make sure all graduate courses taken for Reserve or Undergraduate Credit and Extended Studies courses are accurately reflected on your Patriot Web transcripts. Students in a Bachelor’s/Accelerated Master’s program must complete a Bachelor’s/Accelerated Master’s Transition Form, available on the Registrar’s Office Forms web site.
- Graduates: Make sure all courses taken for Reserve graduate credit appear on the Graduate level of your Patriot Web transcript. If any courses required for graduation appear on the Non-Degree or Undergraduate level of your Patriot Web transcript, contact your department for the appropriate paperwork to complete a graduate transfer of credit.
- Retroactive Graduation Request
If you completed all degree and University requirements within 6 weeks of your date of requested graduation, but your degree was never officially conferred, you may submit a Retroactive Graduation Request. To qualify, there may be no changes or additions to your record since the time of the requested graduation date. You must submit the Retroactive Graduation Request Form to your academic department for preliminary review and approval, than forward the form to the Registrar's Office for processing. If an academic action such as a substitution or waiver, or dropping a minor or second degree is required to meet graduation requirements, please contact the Registrar's Office for guidance at graduate@gmu.edu or 703-993-2431.
