January 2009 (Fall 2008) Graduation Timeline

July 7, 2008 : Graduation Intent Form (GIF) must be submitted on Patriot Web.

July 18, 2008 : Graduate and Certificate students must submit their Graduation Application to their academic department.


Departments submit approved and denied applications to the Registrar's Office.


December 5, 2008 : Thesis and Dissertation Submission Deadline.


January 10, 2009: Degree Conferral.


The Registrar's Office Graduation Section will begin to award degrees after January 10th.
Degrees will not be officially awarded prior to this date.


The 6-Week "Grace Period" is given to students to resolve certain issues delaying degree conferral such as incomplete grades, receipt of study elsewhere transcripts, or processing of substitutions and waiver forms.


February 20, 2009: Marks the end of the 6-week grace period. All incomplete coursework, even if not being applied to the degree, must be resolved and grades posted.


Late February: The Office of Events Management will be mailing information to graduating students concerning the May Commencement/Convocation ceremonies. For more information contact Events Management (993-2853 or visit their website http://events.gmu.edu/.



End of February: Approximate mailing date of January 2009 diplomas.



TBA : Commencement Ceremony at Patriot Center. All students who will graduate in 2009 (January 2009, May 2009, and August 2009) may participate except for Ph.D. students who will earn their degree in August 2009. These students participate in the following May 2010 ceremony.
