Enrollment & Degree Verification

Current Students

Verifications are available on the web 24 hours a day from the National Student Clearinghouse at nominal cost. The National Student Clearinghouse is the Authorized Certifying Agent for George Mason University enrollment and degree verifications. Verifications can be used for insurance companies, scholarships, military identification cards, prospective employment, and all other services that require proof of being enrolled at Mason or having received a degree.

Current students may obtain enrollment verifications at no cost on Patriot Web or by submitting a Verification Request Form in person, by mail or fax with valid Mason or government issued identification at the Office of the Registrar. Requests made in these methods normally take up to five business days to process. Only students in good financial standing with the University and who do not have any holds on their record, may have their verifications processed.

A faxed or hand delivered request is considered mail and will be processed with all other incoming mail for that day. Verifications produced in our office can be held for pick up or mailed to an address designated by the student. Students should make sure their address and expected term of graduation are correct on Patriot Web before submitting any verification or loan deferment request.

Student loan deferment forms for students enrolled at least half time are forwarded for processing by the National Student Clearinghouse. Many Clearinghouse member loan servicers also offer paperless deferment, called Paperless Express. You simply call your servicer to request a deferment and your request is matched against Clearinghouse data to verify your in-school status. Check the list of participating lenders and servicers to see if your lending organization offers paperless deferment.

Most enrolled students receive automatic deferments. If, however, you receive a deferment form from your lender or loan servicer and are still enrolled, submit the form to the registrar’s office, where it will be forwarded to the Clearinghouse for processing.

If you are still enrolled and receive a collection letter, contact your lender or loan servicer to verify that your deferment has been processed. If it has not, contact the Clearinghouse at 703-742-4200 and ask to speak to a Student Service Representative. The representative will verify your deferment information and, if you are being threatened with default, intervene on your behalf with your lender/servicer to ensure your deferment is processed on a priority basis.

  • Six times a semester we report the enrollment status of Mason students to the Clearinghouse, which then reports electronically to loan servicers. Our initial report to the Clearinghouse is two weeks prior to the start of the semester; the last report is at the end of the semester.

  • We cannot process a loan deferment form more than two weeks prior to the start of the current semester.

  • The Clearinghouse processes deferment requests within 48 hours.

  • Don't remember who owns your student loans? Contact the Office of Student Financial Aid to see what loans are managed by Clearinghouse participants.
